About SnO
THE SOCIETY AND ORGANIZATIONS’ MANIFESTO
The current state of the world questions our socio-economic model and calls for an investigation of its historical foundations. There is a critical need to better understand how organizations affect broader social issues and, conversely, how changes in the political and social spheres affect organizational actions. In this context, management as a discipline is becoming increasingly central in both organizations and society as a way to solve problems and as a source of authority.
Building on a wide range of competences, the Center for Research on Society and Organizations (SnO) addresses both the society-related issues that organizations face and the organizational issues that society experiences. Society is understood as the broad space in which ties between individuals are formed, woven and dissolved. The social space is a locus of conflict and exchange. Organizations are organized collective actors whose primary purpose can be either economic (profit), institutional (fairness, professions, rationalities), or moral and political (values, rules, norms).
Organizations include: public companies, family businesses, NGOs, regulatory agencies, standard boards (e.g., in financial accounting), social networks, virtual and non-virtual communities…
Our ambition is to develop rigorous research projects, to deliver thoroughly tested results, and to diffuse and promote analytical models designed to further our understanding of various contemporary issues. Our approach combines a broad range of methods tailored to the phenomena under study, and coming from various disciplines: economy, sociology, psychology, history, as well as original theoretical frameworks.
Phenomena under study include: the role of firms in reshaping social ties; the sources of social actors’ legitimacy; the changes in governance norms; the regulation of bonuses; the national and regional lobbying practices; the mutation of firm identity in response to sustainable development themes; ambivalence and strategic choice; the crisis of public and State management; the marketization of professions and vocations…
